Extension Spring Replacement: getting ready
Open the door by hand and it drifts back down on its own, a little at first and then all at once.
Mississauga, Ontario · Garage Doors · open 24/7

Open the door by hand and it drifts back down on its own, a little at first and then all at once. Nothing is broken that you can see, but the springs along the tracks look tired, rusty and slightly sagging.
Worth answering before the call
Is it a single or a double door, and what is it made of? Do you know how old the springs are or when they were last changed? Is the door closed, fully open, or stuck partway?
What is the difference between extension springs and torsion springs?
They balance the door in different places. Extension springs are the two long coils that run beside the horizontal tracks and stretch as the door closes; they work through pulleys and cables. A torsion spring is wound on a shaft above the door opening and turns drums that wind the cables. The parts, the way tension is set and the service itself are different, so it helps to say which you have when you call.
Is it all right to keep shelves and storage near the springs?
Keep a clear zone around them. The springs, pulleys and cables move on every cycle, and anything leaning into their path, such as a ladder, a hockey bag or a shelf edge, can catch a cable or knock a pulley. Storage that crowds the rear hangers also slows any future service. A hand's width of clear air around each spring's full travel, and nothing hung from the springs or their cables, is the rule of thumb.
